This could be at the scene of the crisis on-site with law enforcement, at the emergency room or at another safe location. Advocates must have a current driver’s license, adequate valid insurance, and a vehicle. Provide education and information directly to victims of domestic violence pertaining to the rights and choices of victims, and the dynamics of abuse within intimate relationships. It is recommended that advocates use the shelter car and do NOT transport victims in their own vehicles. Report child abuse and neglect whenever appropriate. Document intervention to include action plan and client’s signature in an accurate, timely, and comprehensive manner. Carry a pager and be on call for an agreed upon, specified time period in order to respond quickly, effectively, and directly to domestic violence situations. Refrain from using alcohol or any other drugs while on shift or out on a call. Have no personal involvement with a client beyond the listener advocate, crisis intervention role, which shall be limited to contacts while on shift. Provide on-going emotional support and validation in a non-judgmental fashion to victims with whom you may come in contact with again and again. Statistics show victims return an average of 7 times to abusive relationships, and stay in them an average of 12 years. Submit a written resignation at least 2 weeks prior to termination.
